As the change of season beckons and we continue to welcome many wonderful new customers from far and wide (and a big hello to you all!), we thought now would be a great time to rewind and tell you more about the inspiration behind Trailback. So we asked Sandy Wallis, Trailback’s founder, a few questions…
What made you start Trailback?
Having spent many years walking our beloved Rhodesian Ridgeback, Roscoe, I struggled to find the perfect footwear that worked for me in all weathers: I needed something comfortable yet durable, waterproof yet still an ‘everyday’ boot and this seemed very hard to find! I used to wear my old safety riggers which I had bought many years before and they were up to the task but needed some refining. I came to realise that if I wanted a rigger-inspired boot for dog walking and countryside living, I would have to make it myself – and so, Trailback was born.
Was the process to bring Trailback Rigger Boots to market straightforward?
Yes and no! I knew deep down that the boot I was aiming for was going to be special and my aim has always been to produce one of the best waterproof boots you can buy – so that bit was easy. The process to find the best team to bring it to market wasn’t quite so simple and took a lot of research and communication with potential suppliers, but when Vibram, the internationally acclaimed Italian sole experts, said ‘yes’ to me, it was a game changer! Once they were on board, other highly regarded suppliers quickly followed.
Trailback has achieved so much in a short space of time. What are you most proud of?
I am immensely proud of Trailback’s heritage. From its history steeped in the Riggers of the North Sea to where we are now, it is a completely European boot: we source our Vibram soles from Italy, the Sympatex waterproof membrane from Germany and the boot itself is handcrafted by our expert manufacturers in Spain. As a British brand with its roots firmly grounded in beautiful Cornwall, I feel that our provenance is one of the many qualities that sets Trailback apart from its competitors.
I am also proud of the leap of faith I took when I decided to follow my dream of owning my own business and working for myself. It took a while to take the leap as I was comfortable and secure in my job but if I hadn’t have taken that next step, Trailback wouldn’t be where it is now so I feel a true sense of achievement and reward for my determination and passion.
What do you think makes the Trailback so special?
The Trailback Rigger boot has so many special features and thoughtful details that work together to create a fantastic all-round boot including its triple-stitched leather upper, Sympatex waterproof membrane and Goodyear-welted, Vibram sole. We have carefully curated our team of suppliers and work closely with them to ensure that they deliver the superior level of quality and craftsmanship that we expect.
Our boots are so amazingly versatile. I love mine and wear them everywhere – from countryside to city; they are so much more than a walking boot. They can be worn all year round (especially with our unpredictable British climate!) and in all weathers, making them a perfect fit for dog-walking across muddy fields and trekking through the countryside, as well as nipping into town.
As part of our small, family business, I love seeing Roscoe’s sleek silhouette in our logo. Having accompanied me on many a walk since long before Trailback began, he has earned his own special place in the Trailback journey, and in the hearts of our customers too.
What’s the next step for Trailback?
We are just in the process of launching new colourways in our Rigger boots so you can now order them in Black or Tan, as well as the original Brown. My vision is to see Trailbacks become the go-to boot for countryside living, and to see many more happy customers fall in love with our boots and everything that Trailback stands for.
